vilela welcome to the forum. The best estimate of an option's expected value is its market price! Think about it for a moment. What are options? Forget for a moment about volatility and other technicalities. On the high level options are a monetized probability of stock price getting beyond a certain threshold (strike price) on a future date.

Here is another way of thinking about options expected value, which makes it even clearer. When you buy or sell an option, at that instant before the underlying asset price moves, what is the expected profit? Obviously it is zero! If it was not, if the expected profit was positive, it would be mean you have an edge! A systematic advantage, the other side of the transaction is handing you money. That sounds absurd from what we know about how the market works. Hence, the expected value is the option's price.

Nov 12 GBX has declined to $33.37. Today, only 10 days later, I sold my long Nov 35 puts that I bought as a cheap protection anticipating GBX stock and options volatility to continue . This morning Connors RSI for GBX declined to 10 indicating a severely oversold condition prompting me to sell the puts for $2.15. Here is the trade log brought up to date. The balance of my trade has turned positive. Though it means little as long as the short position remains open.

Option Hedging Strategies.

Closing my Silver pair trade (long WPM / short SLV) as it reached my exit point of 1.40 (ratio or WPM to SLV). Note, that while the trade was on lasting for about 13 months. Silver Wheaton has changed its ticker symbol to WPM.

I will continue to monitor the ratio and may put on a reverse trade if it reaches 1.6.

jonescd, Have you tried out iron condors or calendar spreads to trade earnings announcements? Sure they'll cap your profits, due mainly to the fact that they are hedged bets. However, the results will be known within a day usually, meaning a quick profit or loss, and position sizes can be increased for higher profits - particularly if the stock doesn't have a track record for having large post-announcement moves.

Commodity Options and Futures.

Fifteen independent producers with operations focused on the United States reported a combined net loss of $3.7 billion in the first three months of 2017.

Just like with the stock market, trading volumes in oil were also lower. Only about 183,000 WTI contracts and 103,000 Brent futures contracts changed hands, almost 70 percent lower than the trading volume on Thursday. Europe focused on the on-going geopolitical tension given that the financial markets were shut across the region for Easter holiday.

It really comes down to your strategy, and being realistic. My core strategy is I sell put credit spreads on the SPY over and over again. I don't adjust. I risk around 10% of my capital in any one trade. Some years I return 90% and some years I have a loss. I have found over 7 years a 30% CAGR is about right.

Many pro options traders that I know aim for around 20 - 30% a year return. I think if your shooting for returns beyond that you most likely will not have long term success. But once again it all comes down to your strategy.

Here is what my returns look like starting with 30k from 2009 - 2016.

One thing I like to do is have a pot of "FU" money. I use this money to try to make more risky trades (such as trading futures directionally). My goal with the "FU" money is to offset some losses when there is a drawdown. There is also times when I totally blow up my "FU" money account. I notice with this "FU" money I either return over 10x or I loss everything. More or less there is a chance to get much better returns by using "FU" money as a hedge.

But with that said I recommend nailing your core baseline strategy before getting too fancy.

It is notable that international risks are on people's mind. Meanwhile we have rate hikes in full swing at the time that inflation - allegedly the main indicator prescribing those rate increases - is moving in the wrong direction.
